Looking for something more interesting than random web vids to pass the time on a slow workday? Think about composing some brainwaves and perhaps even sharing them with fellow heads.

Gnaural Applet

The Gnaural Java applet allows you to playback binaural beat sequences in a web browser - arrange your own programs using the Gnaural software or simply download example programs and load them via the java interface.

If you’re looking for something a tiny ‘flashier’ - check out this visual HTML Dreammachine. Far simpler than Gnaural, it grants you to control the rate and color of basic full-window flashes.

You can get acquainted with the mental medium via this handy frequency chart listing each range’s associated states of consciousness.

(Theta [4-7hz] FTW!)

The Gadget: Datto’s Backup NAS, a 100/500GB network storage device that automatically uploads whatever is on it to Datto’s servers, giving you an off-site copy of your important information in case of a catastrophic loss.

The Price: $599 for 500GB, $399 for 100GB. Monthly service is $24.95, $249 for 1 year, $499 for 2 years, and $998 for 5 years.

The Verdict: It works. The network interface is only a 10/100, not Gigabit, so transferring stuff to the drive isn’t all that fast. However, that’s not the point of the Datto. You’re not using this as an extra storage drive that you move stuff onto or off of each day, you’re using this as a backup for your more important documents and files. Storing your home business docs, tax records, or whatever irreplaceable (vacation pics?) files you’ve got lying around so that you can get it back in case your kid sets fire to your home.

The only possible problem with this is that uploading 500GB of data takes a long time on a standard cable or DSL connection. It’s not an issue when all your data’s already on their servers and you’re just updating a file or two here or there, but the first upload can take days, if not weeks, depending on your internet speed. You can have them do a roundtrip shipment of the device, manually doing a dump of your drive into their servers and sending your unit back.

If your device fails, Datto will ship your data back to you in under 24 hours. It may not be for everyone, but if you’ve got some important data or you’re running a business at home, you should definitely consider it as an simple offsite backup solution. [Datto]

It’s always nice to see ‘darn cute’ & ‘genuinely interesting’ join forces - especially when it demonstrates autonomous extraction of task constraints (to the Benny Hill theme) -

The Chief Cook Robot learning to cook an omelet by whipping eggs, cutting ham and grating cheese.

Through the use of a probabilistic model using Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) and Gaussian Mixture Regression (GMR), the robot progressively learns to generalize the skill to various situations. It is then possible to reproduce the skill by being robust to dynamic perturbations (e.g. by moving the bowl while the robot whip the eggs). This video is part of the Cogniron project.

This method makes AI development look uncommonly simple and familiar, endearing even.

I doubt that it’s all that more space efficient to combine kitchen gadgets, but it can certainly save you a few precious counter plugs. The ikon by Breville combines your toaster with a kettle, the perfect breakfast machine for when your visiting friends from overseas ask for something other than your trademark Egg McMuffin on a plate. At $130, it’s the same price as Breville’s LED-gauged standalone toaster. So before dropping any cash, decide if it’s more important for you to have hot water or kitchen a kitchen that glows as unnaturally bright as your entertainment center. [product via Techfresh]

Microfiche musical interface

Andrew Turley turned a microfiche viewer into a musical/MIDI interface simply by pointing a photodiode at the screen and feeding the light values into an MCU and out to a Casio keyboard. As you scroll through the microfiche content, the changing light values of the data make music.

>/>/>/>>Hi guys. John Mayer here. When I’m not busy submitting Apple Problem Reports and banging two supermodels at once, I write songs. I know, you probably haven’t heard them lately except at Apple events, but don’t you know how I get those gigs? That’s right, I call people. I call people two at a time with a technique I pioneered called the DoubleDouche. I’m busy, people. Two phones, two ears, two headsets. Believe it.

vmusahelio.gifmocoNews reports speaks are going on between Helio and Virgin Mobile USA about a possible merger between the two wireless phone carriers. Helio has had some finanical issues over the past year, and it’s owner, SK Telecom, has been looking to make a splash in US markets. Current speaks include SK Telecom buying out Virgin Mobile USA, infusing it with cash, and having Virgin Mobile purchase out the Helio via stock purchase. Seeing as both carriers operate on Sprint’s network, technical logistics won’t be a large hurdle, which leaves financials to deal with. But this is still very much in the early stages. [

Not since the USB Food Hub from Solid Alliance have we seen a peripheral that made us actually want to put it in our mouths and swallow. These Cake Royale series drives range from chocolate, to some yellow looking one, to a white one with strawberries on top, and finally a fruity one. Can you tell we went to culinary academy for three years? No price yet, but the release date is sometime in Might. [Vavolo via Nexus404]
